A wise man leads his family by example.

AFTER TEN LONG YEARS LEFT TO ROT IN A NURSING HOME, LUTHER BENNETT is plum sick of this life. Paralyzed from the waist down after suffering a series of strokes, the man who once held power, wealth and prestige in the palm of his hands, now has nothing at all except for a disturbing memory bank full of dreams and hopes from his past. Luther’s son, SAMUEL BENNETT, heir to the misfortune of his father’s wealth has grown weary of slipping into Luther’s shoes and desperately desires an identity of his own. Trapped in a relationship that doesn’t exist and a mounting mistrust of all men, Luther’s only daughter, LYNNE BENNETT just can’t seem to find the love and validation that should have come from her father.

As their lives begin to unravel, the Bennett family must finally make a decision. Live the way they’ve always lived—rooted in secrets, denial and festering anger or change. Can Luther, a mere shell of his former self, save his shattered family from the devastating purgatory he’s created?

Wow, what an amazing book!! That was my initial reaction when I finished the last word of Locked in Purgatory by Nakia Laushaul. It has such a refreshing and new concept that once I started reading I didn’t want to stop. Luther is one of those characters that you love to hate. He is a despicable human being, but I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by him, his family, and his story.

“Karma had it out for Luther, and she was pissed off and hell-bent on destroying everything he’d ever touched. “

Laushaul crafted a complex character in Luther in which the reader is able to see how the actions of one man effects every single person in his life. Locked in Purgatory is a perfect example of how karma works. Many people think that they are getting away with treating people crappy, with using words that totally crush people’s spirits and leave scars, or not taking their relationships and/or commitments seriously until karma comes and hurts them in an unimaginable way. And, boy oh boy, Luther truly learns his lesson in a most painful way and all he can do is sit and do absolutely nothing while karma does her job.

Laushaul is a go-to author for me. I will purchase anything she writes without hesitation. Her stories are always well-developed and the characters have depth that make them seem realistic. Laushaul has the rare talent to craft storylines whether dealing with romantic relationships, personal and/or societal issues that are intricate, complex, and deeply emotional. If you have not read a book by Nakia Laushaul yet then I would highly suggest that you hop over to Amazon and pick anything that she has written because you will not be disappointed!!!
