Camouflaged (Hiding From Love Novella #0.5) by Selena Laurence

Gabe Thompson enlisted to help out his buddy, but three years later he’s 100% US military bad boy, serving in the desert of Afghanistan where the days are hot, but the nights are hotter.

Alexis Garcia is out to save the world. The University of Texas freshman has come to Afghanistan to do aid work with the United Nations. She’s all about the peace, and she has no use for the camp’s biggest, baddest, gun toting player.

But, sometimes camouflage is more than a color, and people aren’t what they seem. When conflict develops not only between Gabe and Alexis, but also all around them, they’re forced to look deeper, and what they find will rock their worlds and change their hearts forever.

Camouflaged is the prequel novella to Top 100 bestselling Military Romance, Hidden.

Her lips parted, and for a minute, I thought she was going to kiss me. I felt my breath hitch with the anticipation, and my hands automatically went to her hips. I looked down at her, trying to decipher what was going through her mind.

“Don’t do that to yourself,” she said fiercely as she rubbed her thumb across my lips. “Don’t make what he did your sin. You’re smart and healthy and young. You can be anyone you want. You could have been fathered by the devil himself and it wouldn’t matter. Be you, but be the best you, not some bad rendition of him.”

She licked her lips, and we froze for a moment that seemed to carry on for hours. Finally, she stepped back, taking her hand off my face, and it was like I’d surfaced from being underwater. The sounds around me rushed back in as if I’d been deaf and could now hear. The tightness of the space was overwhelming and I felt my heart pull inside my chest until it physically ached. I swallowed, trying to overcome the sensation, but it lodged there like a burning lump of coal.

I unconsciously put my fist up to my chest, wondering how I was supposed to do anything with that pain there.

“We don’t have a future, Natalya. I’m not going to marry you and take you back to the States, so either sex is okay or it’s not. Your choice.”

6% into Camouflaged I had to say to myself, “Well, hot da*n!” This guy Gabe sure does not bite his tongue. I had to applaud his honesty, but boy I felt sorry for Natalya who was living in subpar conditions and really thought that this American soldier would take her away from her native land, Afghanistan.

Enter Alexis. She is a young woman that works with the United Nations. She is head strong and quite a match for Gabe. She doesn’t fall for all of his cheesy pick-up lines but the chemistry between them is undeniable.

“Secondly, I’m a soldier. We get ourselves killed to save other people every single day. It’s my job. I’ve been putting myself at risk to protect your for three years now. You just weren’t around to see it.”

On a personal level, this line written by Selena Laurence really struck a chord with me. Maybe, it’s because I am an Army wife but sometimes we (including myself) forget about the daily sacrifices our military personnel make in the quest for our safety and security. Sidebar over and back to the book! By the title being Camouflaged it is obvious that this book is about the military but the real camouflage is what we as human beings do to conceal who we truly are. We are all trying to hide something and/or are too afraid to reveal our true selves but if we are lucky enough along this ride that is called life, we will find someone that will see through it all. Do yourself a favor and take a few hours to read about Gabe and Alexis and see what’s underneath their camouflage!!!

Selena Laurence lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and spends a hell of a lot of time at soccer games, on her laptop, and reading. She requires a Mocha Latte every day to function, keeps a goldendoodle at her feet most of the time, and has more kids than she knows what to do with. Her husband, Mr. Laurence, spends as much time as he can at the office and the gym in order to avoid the kids, the dog, the laptop and the reading, but he always shows up for the soccer games, and he makes a mean Mocha Latte.
