Harlem Book Fair: July 16th

The mission of the Harlem Book Fair is to create access to the transformative power of reading by celebrating, encouraging, and promoting literacy and literacy awareness through public programs, community participation, corporate partnerships and in-school programs that broaden and strengthen the vitality of the African American community.

The Harlem Book Fair is the United State’s largest African-American book fair and the nation’s flagship Black literary event. Held annually in Harlem, NY, the Harlem Book Fair features exhibition booths, panel discussions, book sales, and workshops.

Notable participating authors have included Maya Angelou, Cornel West, Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka, Walter Mosley, Terry McMillan, Touré, Farai Chideya, Stanley Crouch, Nelson George, and Mark Anthony Neal.

National Book Club Conference: July 29th – 31st in Atlanta, GA

National Book Club Conference Foundation, Inc., is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that executes one of the premier annual literary events featuring African-American authors and readers. Book lovers receive unprecedented access to the talent that creates the work they so enjoy.

Over the course of 13 years, some of the most famous and talented authors have been a part of what the NBCC calls “literary bliss”: Walter Mosley, Terry McMillan, Iyanla Vanzant, Susan L. Taylor, Pearl Cleage, Hill Harper, Dr. Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, Roland S. Martin, Terrie Williams, Tyrese Gibson, Zane, Eric Jerome Dickey, Kimberla Lawson Roby, Stephen L. Carter and Walter Dean Myers, among others, including the late E. Lynn Harris, Bebe Moore Campbell, Francis Ray and J. California Cooper.
Important to the NBCC, however, is to introduce new or lesser-known authors that have created stories that are entertaining, informative and important.

The annual weekend, which is almost a spiritual occasion, consists of numerous book club meetings, panel discussions and other events that give readers face time with authors that rivals any literary occasion anywhere, in a fun, relaxed and intimate setting. The NBCC is where readers from across the country come together and depart friends.

“The best book event I’ve ever been to,” the incomparable Walter Mosley said of the NBCC.

Eric Jerome Dickey said: “NBCC… the most important book club conference for authors and publishers of color… and where I go to meet and greet the authors I love to read. NBCC does for the Atlanta what the Harlem Book Fair does for the New York – provides access and information for both the up-and-coming as well as the established authors.”

And Kimberla Lawson Roby added: “The National Book Club Conference is hands-down the most fabulous event I attend each year, and it is the only event that allows multiple authors to come together with hundreds of very dedicated readers – readers that we never would have been blessed to meet otherwise. It is one of the few events I know of that highly benefits publishers, authors, and readers all at the same time and the reason I participate every single year.”
