synopsisNixon Abandonato made his choice. And now he has to pay the price. Tracey is the love of his life, but being with him has made her a target of his family’s enemies. The only way to keep Trace alive is convince the world she means nothing to him.

Until Nix suddenly pushes her away and into the arms of his best friend… But Trace isn’t ready to give up on a future with Nix–and if he won’t fight for them, she will.

In the end, a sacrifice must be made. A life for a life. For what better way to cover a multitude of sins than with the blood of a sinner . . .

I knew the instant she came into the room. It took exactly three seconds for her perfume to float from her body and into my personal hell.

I was lying underneath a giant white down comforter and trying to breathe in the smell of the laundry detergent.

“Chase?” she whispered.

Shit. I squeezed my eyes tightly closed and answered, “What?”

“I’m sorry.”

The light was off so I couldn’t see her, but I knew she was close. Soon her cold feet were touching my legs as she got out of her bed and lay down next to me in mine. Thankfully, the comforter was creating a really nice boundary between her and my body. Otherwise…well, I would have probably died.

“For whatever I did to make you mad.” Her hand reached out to pat my arm. “I’m sorry.”

“Trace…” I groaned, “you didn’t do anything.” And that was the problem, wasn’t it? My pride was hurt a bit; that much was sure. But, part of me, a small part—or maybe a large part—thought we had something. A connection that she and Nixon didn’t have. What we’d shared over the past few months had been unique, different. I felt it and she didn’t. She shouldn’t be apologizing for being the strong one.

“Come here.” Suddenly I wasn’t so concerned with losing control. I was her friend, she’d put me in that zone, and the last thing she needed was for me to be an ass about her not loving me when her grandfather was stuck in hiding and her almost-rapist was chained to a chair on the grounds threatening to kill everyone. “I’m the one who should be sorry.” I kissed her head and sighed when she wrapped her arm around my chest and tucked her head under my arm.

“What are you sorry for?”

Oh so many, many things. “Not being who you need me to be.”

“You mean like earlier when you were being a jackass in your stupid Betty Crocker apron?”

Chuckling, I squeezed her closer. “Hey, don’t hate on the apron. And yes, like earlier today. I guess…well I guess I’m just not used to all your hormones.”

“What?” Her voice bordered on murderous.

I laughed. “Trace, I’m just used to a lot more violence and killing, and here you show up with a cow keychain, a fetish for every damn squirrel on campus and the ability to make me laugh my ass off, regardless of if you mean to or not. You’re just…”

Amazing, she was amazing.

“Perfect, and your light kind of makes my darkness seem a lot more lonely.”

“But you’re with me twenty-four-seven?”

Yes, just another problem. “Right, but you aren’t mine. Get it? It’s like getting a present for Christmas only to find out someone’s going to take it away on New Year’s.”

“What kind of present am I?” Trace laughed. “Come on, you can tell me.”

“A bike.” I shook with laughter. “Because I would ride you so hard that you’d—”

Her fist knocked the wind out of my stomach pretty effectively, ruining the arousal I’d had going for me about fifteen minutes ago.

We lay there in complete silence for a while, and then she said in a sleepy voice, “Don’t leave me again, Chase. Please.”

“I won’t,” I vowed. “I swear.”

myreviewThere’s nothing like reading a book that makes you think and it doesn’t have a cookie cutter storyline. Elect by Rachel Van Dyken is one of those such books that has a complex storyline that makes it hard to predict what will happen from page to page. Oh, and just an FYI: Elite should be read before reading this one.

Rachel Van Dyken has proven she is quite talented and is a diverse writer. I say this because the Eagle Elite series gives us tons of suspense and action and then she also has the Bet series which is downright hilarious!! Rachel Van Dyken has moved into the category of an author that I will read simply because it is her!!

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of Elect in exchange for an honest review.

Set the mood for us…when you’re writing, you have to…

I write in many different places, usually.  If I’m in my home office, I like to have on my comfy socks, a heater, and some loud music.  Then I make sure I have either tea or water next to me as well as my phone.  But, a good part of SWEET REVENGE was written on airplanes, in airports, and in hotels with magnificent views because I had many book signings and attended several conferences during my writing time.  No matter what, I have the music blasting—either from my computer or my earphones.

What has been the most surprising and upsetting part of your literary journey?

I guess the most surprising part has been how wonderfully receptive and loyal fans can be.  They work so hard to promote the books and even formed a Street Team to keep in touch and have some fun.  It has been so heartwarming getting to know some of these wonderful folks!  As for upsetting?  Well, it’s upsetting to realize that I’m not Wonder Woman and I can’t do it all.  I recently gave up my day job as a college professor, a job I really enjoyed, because I finally figured out that there’s only so much time in the day, and some of it needs to be relaxing, fun time with family and friends.  Ah…to be Wonder Woman.

When you’re not writing, what authors do you enjoy reading? What are you currently reading?

I’m a huge Jennifer Apodaca fan, and I’m currently reading her paranormal series that she writes under the name Jennifer Lyons.  I also read Cynthia Eden, Kate Douglas, Reese Monroe, Nora Roberts, and Janet Evanovich regularly.

If you had to write your life story, what would the title be? How does that title portray your story?

Wow – what a great question.  A title, huh?  How about:  Irish girl settles down with Hot Italian Rebel and writes romances that Sizzle.  Long title, right?  Turns out I don’t get to name many of my books.  I try, but my attempts are always just a little off.  Thank goodness for wonderful editors who know how to create titles!

What are three things readers might be surprised to learn about you?

1)    I interned for President Ronald Reagan in California after he was President.  We worked in the penthouse of the Fox Plaza Building (the one blown up in Die Hard), and I saw him every day I was there.

2)    I backpacked across Australia with my karate instructor/boyfriend for six weeks and had a ball.  Even went scuba diving by the Great Barrier Reef.

3)    I have a shoe closet because I absolutely love shoes, boots, sandals…you name it.  They’re in boxes with pictures on the outside.  My sisters make fun of me.

Why do you think your writing matters?

I think all writing matters.  We live in tough times.  The economy is still struggling, more people are getting sick than ever before, and several of us still have loved ones fighting across the globe.  Being able to create a story and yank somebody out of reality for a little while is a good thing to do.  We all need a break every once in a while.

What can your fans look forward to next?

Right now I’m working on BLIND FAITH, which is the third book in the Sin Brothers series.  It features Nate Dean, who has to seek out the one woman who broke his heart so many years ago.  There’s a bit of tension between the two, to put it lightly.  J

Thank you again for allowing me to interview you on Tiffany Talks Books. Are there any last words for those who are reading this interview?

Thank you so much for having me over today!  These were wonderful questions, and I had a lot of fun answering them!

in kelly's corner

After a stalker breaks into her home, internet entrepreneur Bee Langston decides Kelly Connolly is the only man who can help her—but  seeking help from the former Marine isn’t easy, especially after she made a spectacular fool of herself trying to kiss the sinfully sexy bodyguard.

When Kelly spots Bee weaving her way through the Houston nightspot where he’s working security, all those feelings he’s desperately tried to deny for his best friend’s sister come flooding to the surface. He’ll do anything to keep her safe, even if means getting up close and personal with the one woman he simply can’t have.

Soon, Bee’s stalker isn’t his only problem. His gambling addict father is tangled in a mess of debts to two of Houston’s toughest loan sharks. With the family gym on the line, there’s only one way for Kelly to make everything right. He agrees to fight for the Albanian mob in an underground bare-knuckle fighting tournament.

But winning the tournament and saving his family’s legacy comes at a high price—one that just might cost Bee her life.

“Where is Winn?”

Kelly’s gruff, rumbling voice caught me by surprise. I whirled around to find him standing a few steps behind me. Wearing only shorts and sneakers, he wiped at his ridiculously sexy chest with a white gym towel before slinging it over his shoulder. The sight of his tanned, toned chest and the tattoos accentuating the rippling bulges of muscle left me momentarily speechless.

Shaking myself from my lust-induced stupor, I said, “He’s in the restroom. I sort of busted his nose.”

He looked taken aback and then smiled proudly. “Way to go, sweetheart.”

“Um…not exactly. It was an accident.”

“An accident?”

“Well, it tickled and I started laughing—”

Eyes narrowed, he asked, “What tickled?”

“Winn’s hold on me.”

“I see.” His lips twitched, and I knew he wasn’t angry at all. Touching my cheek, he murmured, “I’ll have to keep that in mind…for later.”

At the mention of later, I trembled with anticipation. “Oh?”

“We’ll practice some of the holds Jack showed you.”

“Holds, huh?” I daringly traced his navel and delighted in the way he inhaled sharply. Thinking of the moves I had just learned, I considered whether or not I could take Kelly down. He was a foot taller than me and nearly twice as heavy. Could I catch him off-guard?

Deciding there was no time like the present, I hastily planned my attack. Kelly reached out to stroke my face, but I kicked out my leg to hook his knee. The expression on his face was comical as the realization that I was attacking him registered—but his lightning fast reflexes, honed by years at war, snapped into action.

I gasped as he snatched my ankle mid-air and jerked hard enough to pull me off my feet. The thick mat cushioned my fall. Kelly followed me down to the floor, attempting to trap me, but I twisted my hips and narrowly evaded him. My brief victory didn’t last. He grabbed my wrists in one big paw and pinned them overhead before insinuating himself between my thighs.

Remembering Jack’s lessons, I arched up onto my shoulders and tried to squeeze his ribs with my knees. Kelly shifted, and I ended up wrapping my legs around his waist. Our bodies locked together in such an intimate way. Suddenly my failed attack started to feel like foreplay.

Changing tactics, I hooked my ankles at the small of Kelly’s back and rocked my body against his. His low groan sounded almost pained. Eyes flashing with need, he lowered his face and warningly growled, “Bee.”

Breathless and shaking with desire, I whispered, “Kiss me.”

He capitulated to my request and brushed his mouth against mine. Refusing to be denied what I wanted most, I thrust my aching breasts against his hot, hard chest and dipped my tongue between his lips. A rumbling noise emanated from his throat, vibrating against my lips and sending white-hot shivers through my core.

A loudly cleared throat interrupted our steamy kiss. Tearing away from each other, we glanced in the direction of the noise and discovered Jack standing a few feet away and watching us with amusement. The rest of the room was empty except for Winn, who seemed to have gotten his bloody nose under control.

Jack rubbed his jaw as if thinking. “You know, I’m pretty sure that’s not a self-defense technique I teach.”

Not the least bit embarrassed, I simply shrugged. “You’d have a hell of a lot more signups for your classes if you did.”
